Here's your chance to own the legendary Hertz "Rent-A-Racer," the rental car offered to customers with a preference for high performance. We've captured every heart-pounding detail of one of the most sought-after cars of all time, down to the feisty V-8 engine and all the trademark design features for which Carroll Shelby® is famous.
April of 1964 saw the introduction of the Mustang, which immediately became one of the most popular cars ever sold by Ford. By August of that year, Ford approached Carroll Shelby® and asked him to experiment with the Mustang 2+2 fastback to see if it could be made into a potential SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) racer. The result was the Shelby GT-350TM. It was a noisy bear of a car, but exciting and fast. And it did win.
In late 1965, Shelby® American's general manager proposed the sale of a limited number of GT-350®s to the Hertz Rental Car Corporation. Hertz had already begun a campaign of renting performance cars, so they were interested in working with Shelby® American. The first 85 models, designated GT-350HTM (for Hertz), had certain minor changes for driver convenience and safety. They were all black with gold stripes and had a four-speed manual transmission. By November, Hertz requested an automatic transmission and the order was increased to 200 cars.
Shelby® and Hertz planned a joint advertising effort. By late December, Hertz had ordered another 800 cars. The final 800 were painted in various colors, offered by Shelby® for the 1966 model year. These "Rent-a-Racers" were to cement Shelby®'s reputation for excellence, increasing the company's exposure and production.
