Ferdinand Porsche gained experience during the First World War in the development of military vehicles and for a long time he worked as a constructor for other ventures (e.g. k.u.k Hofwagenfabrik Ludwig Lohner & Co in Vienna, chief of the construction office and member of the board of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, later Daimler Benz in Stuttgart). On December first 1930 he opened up his own construction office, which was officially registerd on April 25th 1931 as "Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche limited, construction and advice for engine and vehicle construction". The company resided in the Kronenstraße 24 in Stuttgart. It was responsible for the construction of the Auto Union race cars, as well as the development of the Volkswagen.
In 1937 the legal form was changed into a limited commercial partnership, which lasted until 1972. Between 1944 and 1950 the company had been evacuated to the Porsche facility in Gmuend, Austria. There under the head of Ferry Porsche, the first car labelled Porsche – the 356 Nr. 1 Roadster – and its production series 356 was developed, the latter in a low volume production of 47 pieces until 1950. The son of Ferdinand Porsche, Ferry Porsche, took over the chair of the company in 1947, when his father was in French captivity. The suspicion of war crime involvement against Ferry Porsche was dropped quickly and he was able to continue the business, together with his sister Louise, in order to finance the bail money for their father. He inherited half of the company shares and was able to build up the today world famous sports car entity. Also the world famous Porsche trademark and the Porsche emblem were concepts of Ferry. The daughter of Ferdinand Porsche, Louise Piech, inherited the other half of the company shares. Her husband, the lawyer Anton Piech, was among others part of the construction office and during the Nazi regime; he was factory manager and chief executive of the Volkswagen limited in Wolfsburg. In 1950 with a total of 400 cars Porsche began the production of the 356 in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. At the end of the production in 1965 the total amount of cars produced was 76302. In 1963 the best known model of the producer was presented, the 911.
Current RRP for this model is £64.99.
